Xofu MCP Setup and Usage Guide

Last updated

The Xofu MCP is a remote MCP server that connects AI assistants, such as Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor, to your Xofu account. Once it's connected, you can ask about your projects' AI visibility, citations, sentiment and query fan-outs in plain language, and set up and change projects from the same chat.

What is the Xofu MCP?

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets AI apps use tools from other services. The Xofu MCP gives your assistant 38 tools: 22 that read your Xofu data, and 16 that set up and change your projects.

It uses the same figures as the Xofu dashboard, so its numbers match what you see there for the same dates and filters. The assistant picks the tools it needs from your question. You don't need to know their names, but the tool reference lists each one.

Why use it?

  • Ask instead of clicking through tabs. A question like "Which competitor gained the most visibility last month, and on which topics?" gets one answer, built from the same data as the dashboard.
  • Combine and compare. Compare projects, accounts or time periods in one answer, or put visibility, citations and sentiment side by side.
  • Go below the summaries. Read individual AI answers in full, see which brands each one mentions, and see what the engines searched for before answering.
  • Turn data into deliverables. Ask for a client summary, a table or a chart, and the assistant builds it from your current Xofu data.
  • Set up projects in a conversation. Create a project from a brand, a page or your own prompts, adjust its prompts, competitors and tags, then start its runs.

Before you start

  • A Xofu account. Any plan works, including Free. Create a free account if you don't have one.
  • An app that supports remote MCP servers. This guide covers Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor. Claude works on every plan. ChatGPT needs a Business, Enterprise or Edu plan for every tool to work. Each app's steps say what it needs.
  • The server URL: https://mcp.xofu.com/mcp

How to set up the Xofu MCP

Pick your app below. Each one connects to the same server URL and signs in with your Xofu account. Setup takes a couple of minutes.

Claude

Custom connectors work on every Claude plan. Free accounts can add one. A connector you add works in the Claude desktop app, on the web and on mobile.

  1. In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors.
  2. Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
  3. Enter Xofu as the name and https://mcp.xofu.com/mcp as the server URL, then click Continue.
  4. Keep the sign-in settings Claude suggests and click Add. You don't need an OAuth client ID or secret.
  5. Sign in to Xofu in your browser and click Allow (see Signing in to Xofu).
  6. In a chat, click + at the lower left, then Connectors, and turn Xofu on.

Claude asks for your approval before it uses a Xofu tool. You can allow each tool once or always.

On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner adds Xofu first, in Organization settings > Connectors (click Add, then Custom, then Web). Then each member opens Customize > Connectors, finds Xofu and clicks Connect.

More detail: Claude's guide to custom connectors.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT adds custom MCP servers on the web, at chatgpt.com. OpenAI offers them on its Business, Enterprise and Edu plans. On Pro, only tools that read data work, so you can look at your Xofu data but not change projects. On a Business plan, only an admin or owner can add Xofu.

  1. Open chatgpt.com in your browser and go to Plugins.
  2. Click the plus button, then Add custom MCP server.
  3. Enter Xofu as the name. Under Connection, enter https://mcp.xofu.com/mcp.
  4. For authentication, choose OAuth.
  5. Read the warning, check I understand and want to continue, and click Create as a plugin.
  6. ChatGPT lists Xofu's tools. Add the plugin, then sign in to Xofu and click Allow (see Signing in to Xofu).
  7. In a chat, type @ and choose Xofu. This applies to one message, so mention Xofu again when a follow-up needs new data.

ChatGPT asks you to confirm before a Xofu tool changes anything.

OpenAI's plans change often. For the latest, see Connecting custom MCP servers in ChatGPT.

Cursor

Cursor reads its MCP servers from a settings file. The quickest way is the install link:

Add Xofu to Cursor

With Cursor installed, the link opens it and offers to add Xofu. To add it yourself instead:

  1. Open ~/.cursor/mcp.json, the mcp.json file in the .cursor folder of your home folder. Create it if it isn't there. For one project only, use .cursor/mcp.json in that project instead.
  2. Add Xofu under mcpServers. If the file already lists other servers, add the xofu entry next to them.
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "xofu": {
          "url": "https://mcp.xofu.com/mcp"
        }
      }
    }
  3. Save the file and restart Cursor.

Then, either way:

  1. Open Customize in Cursor's sidebar, where Xofu is listed with your other MCP servers.
  2. Sign in to Xofu when Cursor asks, and click Allow (see Signing in to Xofu).
  3. In Agent chat, Cursor uses Xofu's tools when your question needs them. By default it asks for your approval first.

More detail: Cursor's MCP documentation.

Signing in to Xofu

Every app signs in the same way.

  1. The app opens a Xofu page in your browser. If you aren't logged in to Xofu, log in, and you'll come back to this page.
  2. The page says the app wants to access your Xofu account, shows the email you're signed in as, and lists what the app will be able to do:
    • Read your Xofu projects and their results
    • Create and change projects, prompts and settings
  3. Click Allow. Your browser sends you back to the app.

The page also shows where you'll be sent back to. Only click Allow if you started the connection yourself.

The app stays signed in while you use it. If you don't use it for 30 days, it asks you to sign in again.

Check that it works

Start a new chat and ask:

Who am I signed in to Xofu as?

The assistant answers with your email, your Xofu accounts and what each plan allows. If it says it can't reach Xofu, check that Xofu is turned on for the chat, as in your app's steps above, and sign in again if the app asks you to.

Things to try

Replace the parts in brackets with your own projects and brands.

  • "List my Xofu projects and tell me which three are the most visible."
  • "How has visibility for [project] changed over the last 90 days, week by week, against its competitors?"
  • "Which topics is [brand] weakest on, and which competitors come up instead?"
  • "Which domains do AI answers cite most for [project] over the last 30 days? Which of them are competitors' sites?"
  • "What do the AI engines search for before answering [project]'s prompts? Group the searches into themes."
  • "Show me the most negative answers about [brand] in the latest sentiment run, with the claims behind the scores."
  • "Create a project for [brand] in my [account] account. Show me the preview first."

Answers are better when you name the project as it appears in Xofu and say which dates you mean. Follow-up questions in the same chat build on what the assistant has already looked up.

How changes work

The assistant changes Xofu only when you ask it to, and only what you could change yourself in the dashboard.

  • Big changes wait for your yes. Creating a project, activating one, switching sentiment tracking on, deleting prompts and deleting a tag always show a preview first. Nothing changes until you confirm.
  • You can preview anything. Ask for a preview before changing many prompts or domains at once.
  • Activating starts the runs. The first run starts right away, then the project runs on its schedule. The preview says how many answers each run and each month will collect.
  • The dashboard's rules apply. Competitors can't change once a project is activated. An active project's prompts count toward your plan's prompt limit. Projects on the flexible pricing plan are paid for and started in the dashboard.
  • Up to 5 new projects a day per account can be created through the Xofu MCP.

Tool reference

Your app shows a tool's name or its title when the assistant uses it. Every tool reads data except the project management tools, which change it.

Accounts and projects

Start here. Most other tools work on one project, and these find it.

whoami Your Xofu accounts
Who you're signed in as, your accounts and your role in each, and what each plan allows: its prompt limit and how much is left, its AI engines, how often it runs, and its sentiment tracking limits.
list_projects Your Xofu projects
The projects you can see across all your accounts, including ones shared with you, and how recent their results are. It can add each project's visibility, to compare them.
get_project A Xofu project's setup
One project's headline visibility and setup: its brand, competitors, topics, engines, schedule, tracked domains, custom tags and latest runs.
list_prompts A Xofu project's prompts
The prompts (questions) a project asks AI engines, grouped by topic.
xofu_guide How Xofu counts things
How Xofu works out its figures, such as dates, engines, visibility and citations. The assistant reads it so it explains your numbers correctly.

Visibility

How visible a brand and its competitors are in AI answers, as on the dashboard's Brand tab.

get_visibility Visibility in AI answers
Visibility (0 to 100), share of voice, average position, mentions and own-site citations for the brand and its competitors, with the change from the period before and a point per day, week or month. It can also break the brand's figures down by topic, buyer persona, page or engine.

Runs and answers

Each run asks every prompt of every AI engine the project uses. These tools show what came back.

list_runs A Xofu project's runs
A project's runs, newest first, with each one's status, engines, and how many answers it collected.
list_answers One run's answers
One run's answers by prompt and engine: whether the brand was mentioned, its position and score, the other brands in the order mentioned, and how many links each answer cites.
get_answer One AI answer in full
One AI answer in full: its text, the brands it mentions, the pages it cites, and the searches the engine ran before answering.

Citations

The sites and pages AI answers cite, as on the dashboard's Citations tab.

get_cited_domains Domains cited in AI answers
The most-cited domains, with their citations, answers, prompts and share of all citations. It can also check a list of exact domains, such as your own site and your competitors'.
get_cited_pages Pages cited in AI answers
The most-cited pages, or one site's pages, with how often the brand is mentioned alongside each one.
get_domain_citations One domain's citations
One domain in depth: its citations by engine, topic and day, by prompt, or the answers that cite it.
get_citation_total All citations, by engine and day
All citations for a period, by engine and by day, with the runs on each day so gaps in the data stand out.

Query fan-outs (QFOs)

Before answering, some AI engines search the web. Those searches are called query fan-outs. Xofu records them for ChatGPT with search and for Gemini. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode don't show theirs.

get_fanouts Most frequent query fan-outs
The searches engines ran most often before answering a project's prompts, over a period or one run, with how many answers and prompts led to each. It can also show which searches are new since the period before and which dropped out.
list_answer_fanouts One run's query fan-outs
Every search each answer in one run made before answering, by prompt and engine.
get_sentiment_fanouts Most frequent query fan-outs in sentiment answers
The searches engines ran most often before answering a project's sentiment questions, with the brands and features those answers were about.

Sentiment

For projects with sentiment tracking on: how positively AI answers describe the brand and its competitors on each feature, as on the dashboard's Sentiment tab.

get_sentiment Sentiment in AI answers
Each run's overall sentiment score and its score per feature, for the brand and each competitor, with the change since the run before. It can also show one engine's view.
get_sentiment_answers The answers behind sentiment
The scored answers behind a sentiment score, with the claims that raised or lowered it and the searches the engine ran first.
get_sentiment_citations Sites cited in sentiment answers
The domains or pages one sentiment run's answers cite, and how positive the answers citing them were.
get_sentiment_domain_features Sentiment citations by feature, run by run
For a set of domains, how often each was cited in sentiment answers, by feature and run by run.

Citation audits

A citation audit is a one-off analysis of the sites a project's AI answers cite.

list_audits A Xofu project's citation audits
A project's citation audits, newest first, with the dates and brands each covers and how far it got.
get_audit One citation audit's results
One audit's results: the cited domains rated as outreach targets, which cited pages mention the brand and each competitor, or the brand's mentions and citations by prompt.

Project management

These tools change Xofu. The assistant uses them only when you ask, and only for what you could change yourself in the dashboard. See How changes work.

Projects

create_project Create a Xofu project
Create a project from a brand name, a page's address, or prompts you give. From a brand or a page, Xofu writes the prompts and suggests competitors within a few minutes. Previews first.
activate_project Activate a project
Start a project's runs. The preview says when the first run starts and how many answers each run and each month will collect. Previews first.
deactivate_project Deactivate a project
Stop a project's runs. Its results so far stay.
rename_project Rename a project
Give a project a new name. Nothing else changes.
set_sentiment_tracking Switch sentiment tracking on or off
Switch sentiment tracking on or off for a project, within your plan's limits. Switching it on previews first.

Prompts and topics

add_prompts Add prompts to a Xofu project
Add prompts under a topic, optionally for one page. Prompts the project already has are skipped.
move_prompts Move prompts to another topic
Put prompts under another topic. Their past answers move with them.
delete_prompts Delete a project's prompts
Delete prompts. Their past answers drop out of every figure. Previews first.
remove_topics Take topics off a project's list
Take topics off an activated project's topic list, the list the dashboard offers as filters. Their prompts keep running.

Competitors

add_competitors Add competitors
Add competitors to a project that hasn't been activated yet.
remove_competitors Remove competitors
Remove competitors from a project that hasn't been activated yet.

Tags and tracked domains

create_tag Create a domain tag
Create a custom tag for labeling the domains a project's answers cite.
update_tag Rename or recolor a domain tag
Rename or recolor a custom tag. The domains it labels keep it.
delete_tag Delete a domain tag
Delete a custom tag. The domains it labels are untagged. Previews first.
tag_domains Tag domains
Give domains a built-in tag (owned, competitor, affiliate or social), a custom tag, or no tag.
remove_domains Remove tracked domains
Take domains off a project's tracked domains. Their citations still count.

Good to know

  • Times are US Eastern. Dates in answers are Eastern calendar days.
  • The default period is the last 14 days, as on the dashboard. Say which dates you mean for anything else.
  • Large requests may need narrowing. On very large projects or long periods, a request can take too long. Xofu then asks the assistant to narrow it, for example to fewer days, one engine or fewer topics, and the assistant usually does that on its own.
  • Engine upgrades. From time to time Xofu moves a platform, such as ChatGPT, to a newer AI model. When an upgrade falls inside the data, results mention it, because it can explain a jump or a dip.
  • A completed run can be missing a few answers. Some answers fail. list_runs shows how many each run collected out of those expected.

FAQ

Is the Xofu MCP free?

Yes. It's included in every Xofu plan, including Free, at no extra cost. Your plan's limits still apply, such as its prompt limit, its AI engines and how often its projects run.

Which AI apps work with the Xofu MCP?

Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor, which this guide covers, and other apps that support remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in. The server URL is https://mcp.xofu.com/mcp.

Do I need an API key?

No. You sign in with your Xofu account in your browser, and the app stays signed in.

What can the assistant see in my Xofu account?

The same accounts and projects you see when you log in to Xofu, including projects shared with you. Nothing more.

Can the assistant change my projects?

Only when you ask, and only what you could change yourself in the dashboard. Creating or activating a project, switching sentiment tracking on, and deleting prompts or tags always show a preview first and wait for your confirmation.

Do the numbers match the Xofu dashboard?

Yes. The Xofu MCP uses the dashboard's own calculations. If a figure looks different, check that the dates and filters match the ones you used on the dashboard.

How do I disconnect Xofu?

Remove the Xofu connector in your app's settings. A connection that goes unused for 30 days also expires on its own.
